Make stop motion on a computer

  1. 01Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Safari. There's nothing to download or install.
  2. 02Point your webcam at the scene, or plug in a USB webcam and set it on a stand.
  3. 03Press Start animating, allow the camera, and press the space bar to take each frame.
  4. 04Use the arrow keys to step through frames, and Delete to remove one.
  5. 05Press Play to check the film, then Export to save an MP4.

Why software in the browser

Desktop stop motion programs need installing, and school and work computers often don't allow that. This studio runs in the browser, so it works on a locked-down school Chromebook, a work laptop or a borrowed computer.

Your frames stay on the computer you shoot on; nothing is uploaded. To move a film to another device, download its frames from Your films and open the file there.

  • Live webcam capture with onion skin (1 to 3 ghost frames) and a compare button.
  • A timer that takes a frame every 2, 3, 5 or 10 seconds.
  • Frame editing: delete with undo, duplicate, and reorder.
  • Playback at 5 to 24 frames per second.
  • MP4 export: 720p free, with a small mark; 1080p without the mark, sound and GIF with Lifetime.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: space or Enter to shoot, arrows to step, Delete to remove, Escape to close.

Is there free stop motion software for Windows?

Yes: this one runs in Chrome or Edge on Windows with no install. Use the laptop's camera or a USB webcam.

Does it work on a Chromebook?

Yes, in Chrome, as long as your school or organisation allows the camera for websites. If it's blocked, ask your teacher, or make a film from photos.

Do I need an account?

No. Shooting, editing and 720p export need no account. An account is only needed to buy Lifetime, so it works on all your devices.

Can I use it offline?

Your films are saved on your device as you shoot, so a dropped connection doesn't lose them. The page itself needs a connection to open.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. The camera, your frames and the videos you make all stay in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to us or stored on a server.
